CHOUDRANT, La. - Rice University senior golfer Michael Whitehead fired a career-low 66 during the opening round of the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Intercollegiate on Monday. But after carding one of only six, sub-70 rounds during the day, the Sugar Land native shot a 78 during Monday's afternoon round. He heads into Tuesday's final 18 holes tied for third and five strokes off the lead.
Whitehead's 66 on Monday ties for the second-lowest round at Rice since the mid-1980. He is currently at even par with a 144 score.
After opening play with a 72, Southeastern Louisiana's Horacio Leon shot a second-round 67 and is currently five-under through two rounds. LSU's Ken Looper second with a two-round score of 142 while Whitehead is tied with Louisiana Tech's Sam Forgan and Clinton Shepard for third.
As a team, Rice is tied for eighth with a two-round score of 608 (297-311).
Southeastern Louisiana shot a two-round score of 581 on Monday and has a three-stroke lead over Jacksonville State and Louisiana Tech who are tied for second. Southern Miss is fourth with a 596 team score while UMKC is fifth with a 597.
The final round begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. at Squire Creek Country Club.
