Rice University senior Michael Whitehead fired a three-under par 69 on Tuesday to card 54-hole, 212 score (-4) and finish in a tie for eighth at the David Toms Intercollegiate hosted by LSU and played at the Country Club of Louisiana in Baton Rouge.
After opening tournament play with a 69, Whitehead shot a 74 Monday afternoon and began Tuesday's final round one-under par and tied for 23rd at the final fall tournament of the season for the Owls.
Starting at No. 10 on Tuesday, the Sugar Land native birdied the first two holes of his round. He also eagled the par-five second hole en route to tying for the fourth-lowest round of the day. Over the last four tournaments, Whitehead tied for fifth at one tournament and also had two runner-up finishes in addition to his performance in Baton Rouge. He had nine par or better rounds over his last 12 rounds of golf.
Rice freshman Jeff Wibawa was tied for 15th following Monday's play but finished in a tie for 37th after a five-over par 77 left him with a three-round 219 score (+3).
As a team, Rice shot a 302 on Tuesday to finish with a three-round score of 893 (+14) and place 14th in the field.
No. 8 Arkansas shot a low-round 284 on Tuesday to narrow the gap between 36-hole leader LSU but the No. 9 Tigers held on for a two-stroke win over the second-place Razorbacks with a three-round score of 848 (-16). Finishing third was South Alabama who shot a 285 on Tuesday to finish with an 855 (-9).
LSU's Austin Gutgsell, playing as an individual, shot a 69 on Tuesday to finish with a three-round score of 206 (-10) and top the player leader board by four strokes. LSU's Ken Looper and John Peterson along with South Alabama's Chris Piumelli and Ethan Tracy finished in a tie for second with three-round scores of 210 (-6).
Rice returns to the course for competition next February. The Owls begin the spring at the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational Feb. 14-15 in San Antonio before playing host to the 11th Annual Rice Intercollegiate presented by Srixon Feb. 21-22.
