DURHAM, N.C. - Against the strongest field the Owls have faced during the fall season, Rice senior Michael Whitehead shares the lead after two rounds of the Rod Myers Invitational hosted by Duke. Whitehead is five-under through 36 holes of golf with the final 18 slated to begin Monday morning.
"That is pretty outstanding," Rice head coach Drew Scott said of Whitehead's performance Sunday. "For him to have an opportunity to win this golf tournament would be a great individual accomplishment and would mean a lot to Rice University golf as well.
"I think we are going to have a great round tomorrow. Hopefully Michael will play steady like he has all year and walk away with a championship.
Whitehead began the day with a four-under par 68 during the morning round. He played even golf through his first nine holes (one birdie and one bogey) before a strong opening-round finish saw him play the Duke University Golf Club's front nine at four-under par. He scored back-to-back birdies at Nos. 2 and 3 then wrapped up the round with two more birdies on the front nine's two par fives (No. 7 and No. 9).
The Sugar Land native opened his second round with another birdie and was two-under at the turn. He rebounded from back-to-back bogeys on the front nine at No. 3 and No. 4 to sink birdie putts at No. 6 and No. 7. After a bogey on No. 8, he shot par on the final hole for a one-under 71.
He shares the second-round lead with Tulsa's Arie Fauzi who shot a second-round 67. For the tournament both are at five-under (139). Iowa's Brad Hopfinger and North Carolina State's Albin Choi are a stroke back. There are 11 players within three strokes of the lead.
As a team, Rice is in 11th place at the tournament. The Owls have a two-round score of 598 (297-301). Rice heads into the final round 11 strokes back of 10th-place East Tennessee State.
