Rice junior Jessica Jackson kept her career record perfect against Texas, but the 31st ranked Longhorns proved to be too deep for the Owls, taking a 6-1 decision at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin on Saturday.
Jackson defeated 59th-ranked Vanja Corovic of Texas, 6-1. 0-6. 7-5, to score Rice's point in the match. Last year, she also was the Owls' lone winner against the Longhorns. Julie Chao and Ann Guzman also picked up a win against a ranked opponent, downing the Horn's No. 1 doubles team of Amanda Craddock and Krista Damico, who entered the match ranked 27th in the country, 8-5.
Chao extended Damico, who is ranked 27th, to three sets at No. 2 singles, before falling 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Rice's Rebekka Hänle, who was ranked 73rd, fell to Texas's 22nd ranked Aeriel Harris. 6-3, 6-3.
"Give Texas credit, they played the big points a little better than us today," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "I was pleased with the fight that our team showed, but not satisfied with the result. We look forward to hitting the practice court next week so that we can turn some of the close matches that we lost today into victories next time we play."
The Owls will be back on the court next Saturday, when they host Texas State at 12:30
