Rice University Director of Athletics Chris Del Conte announced on Friday that former Houston Chronicle beat writer MoiseKapenda Bower has joined the department as the staff writer for the school's athletics web site (riceowls.com).
"MK is someone who showed tremendous appreciation for the unique challenge of being a student-athlete here at Rice and we felt this was an unprecedented opportunity to allow us to tell our story," Del Conte said. "He is a respected observer of all our programs and we know that our fans will be coming to the web site to read his work."
Bower is charged with the task of sharing the unique story of Rice athletics. He will pen features that spotlight student-athletes and reveal noteworthy department updates, author a blog that provides behind-the-scenes insight and opinion, and manage the department twitter page as to keep the most ardent Rice fan abreast of breaking news both on and off the fields of play.
"With the changes in the media world, it became apparent to us that we had to be proactive in order to utilize all of the emerging forms of distribution," Del Conte noted. "Everything we are doing is dedicated to bringing the stories of our student-athletes' accomplishments in both in the classroom and in competition to the widest possible audience," he added.
Formerly of the Houston Chronicle, Bower spent five years covering Rice athletics for the newspaper. His time on the beat coincided with Rice undergoing significant transitions within its athletic department, including changes in administrative leadership, extensive facility upgrades, and sweeping success in several sports. From bowl berths in football, multiple conference championships in women's track and field, and three consecutive College World Series appearances in baseball, Bower documented those accomplishments for the Chronicle.
Before his promotion to the Rice beat in September 2004, Bower spent five years covering area high schools for the newspaper. He joined the Chronicle in November 1999.
