Irving, Texas - Rice distance runner Lennie Waite was one of 12 recipients of the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship awarded by Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky. This is the first year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach, and faculty athletics representative before passing away in November of 2008. The conference annually presents the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship awards to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
Waite competed four years in both cross country and distance events for the track team, earning 14 varsity letters with the Owls. She earned All-America honors in the mile during the 2009 indoor season and the 3000m steeplechase in the outdoor season. An economics, psychology, and managerial studies major, she graduated cum laude and was recently named to the ESPN The Magazine women's track & field/cross country Academic All-America second team.
