Seven of the Owls 16 sports were honored for their efforts in the classroom, and their 43,8% total ranks fourth among schools who compete in NCAA's Bowl Subdivision in football. The Owls finished 19th among all schools who field at least some teams at the Division 1 level, and their total of seven honored teams was three more than the combined total of the other 11 teams who comprise Conference USA (one team each by Tulsa, UTEP, SMU and East Carolina).
"While we have had a great season in athletic competition this year, the success our student-athletes continue to demonstrate in their academic efforts shows the core strength of our program," Rice Athletics Director Chris Del Conte said. "It is a true team effort between the remarkable men and women who represent Rice, the coaches who brought them to Rice, and the members of our support staff. They set a wonderful example for aspiring student-athletes everywhere."
Rice teams receiving public recognition awards from the NCAA include football, men's indoor track, women's basketball, women's indoor track, women's outdoor track, women's cross country and women's swimming.
The Academic Progress Rate (APR) was introduced in 2005 as a more real-time assessment of teams' academic performance than the prior six-year graduation-rate calculation provided. The APR awards two points per semester to student-athletes who meet academic eligibility standards and remain enrolled at an institution. A team's APR is the total points earned by the team at a given time divided by the total points possible. Teams that finished in the top 10 percent of the rankings for their respective sport receive public recognition awards.
