The Rice women's tennis team shook off the frustration of a close loss to SMU on Friday, posting a dominating 7-0 victory over Northwestern State to close out their 2009 dual season with an 11-11 record.
"It felt good to see how we came out this morning and did not carrying anything over from last night's match (with SMU)," Rice women's coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "This was a good way to close out the regular season and get us in the right frame of mind for the conference tournament at home," she added.
Rice was never in trouble in the match, sweeping all three doubles matches and taking all six singles contests in straight sets against a Northwestern State team that had previously defeated two C-USA teams this season.
Senior Emily Braid closed out her Rice career with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.
"It was great to see Emily end her career with a win," Schmidt said. "Her match showed the fire she has brought to every match during her four years at Rice."
The Owls will wait until Monday to learn if they will earn a bye in the first round of the Conference USA Women's Championships or if they will open play in the opening round of action on Thursday at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the Rice campus.
Matches will take place at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday.
