
Owls Blank Aztecs To Claim Rice Invitational Title

The 36th-ranked Rice Owls men's tennis team capped an unbeaten weekend by blitzing No. 38 San Diego State, 4-0 at the Jack Hess Tennis Center and capture the team title in the 51st Hampton Inn Galleria Rice Invitational.
The Owls captured the event for the 15th time in history and the ninth time in the last 13 years.
Rice (13-6) jumped out quickly, taking the doubles point thanks to wins by Christoph Müller and Tobias Scheil (8-5) at No. 1 and Bruno Rosa and Isamu Tachibana at No. 2 (8-6). Müller and Scheil, who are currently ranked 47th in the country, down SDSU's 57th-ranked tandem of Achim Ceban and Giovanni Vaglietti.
Rosa, ranked 46th nationally in singles, continued his strong play, pushing the lead to 2-0 with a straight set win over Ceban (6-2, 6-2). In his last six completed matches, Rosa has not lost a set.
Rice junior Dennis Polyakov added Rice's third point with a straight set win at No. 6 (6-1, 6-4) and freshman Sam Garforth-Bles clinched the match for the Owls with a straight set win at No. 4 (7-6, 6-1).
Rice returns the court on Friday when they host 17th-ranked Pepperdine at 1 p.m. on Friday.
