The Rice women's tennis team battled the Louisville Cardinals to a draw in singles, but that was not enough to overcome the loss of the doubles point as the Owls dropped a 4-3 decision on the road at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on Louisville campus on Saturday.
"We had some good individual results today in singles," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "But as a team, we need to do a better job stepping up at key moments," she added.
After dropping the doubles point, the Owls picked up wins in singles at No. 1 where Julie Chao won in straight sets (6-2, 7-5) as did Rebecca Line at No. 5 (6-2, 6-2). Their final point came in the No. 4 match where Rebecca Hanle won a tie-breaker 10-6 after trading 7-5 decisions in the first two sets.
But the Cardinals grabbed the other three singles points to raise their record to 7-6, while the Owls fell to 9-6.
. "I know the team is disappointed with today's result and they are all looking forward to getting back out there next Saturday against South Alabama," Schmidt said. "We are also excited to be back playing on our home courts after several weeks on the road," she concluded.
The Owls will host South Alabama at 3:00 on Saturday at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
