HOUSTON - The Rice University swim team competes in its final dual meet of the regular season this Saturday (Feb. 7) in San Antonio. The Owls face the University of the Incarnate Word at 1 pm in the Barshop Natatorium on the UIW campus.
The non-conference dual meet features 14 swim events, including two relay races, and springboard diving (order listed below). The meet is the Owls' last of the regular season before competing in the Conference USA Championships Feb. 25-28. Rice head coach Seth Huston, now in his seventh year at the helm of the swim program, said the meet is a good chance for the team members to get some event-specific racing opportunities heading into the league championships. With the flu-bug that hit the team a few weeks ago finally in the past, Huston said the Owls can focus on tasks at hand.
"Our training is going well," Huston said. "Skylar Craig looks better and better each week and Kait Chura has been training very well lately. We are three weeks out from the C-USA Championships. Hopefully we are on the back side of illnesses on the team. I was very encouraged with our results last weekend, particularly on Saturday (the second day of the two-day LSU Invitational). Natalie Kirchhoff, Caitlin Warner and Sarah Korellis had some break-through performances.
"We plan to mix it up a bit this weekend," Huston added. "We need to get a few people in some races that they may be swimming at conference, but haven't had many opportunities thus far. We will also put some people in alternate events to give them a break from their usual races. The important thing about this weekend is to continue sharpening our performances and get up and race."
