Marshall Rallies Past Rice for 61-51 Victory

Huntington, W.Va. -- Marshall used a late second-half 10-1 run to rally past Rice for a 61-51 Conference USA victory in the Henderson Center.
After taking a six-point lead in the locker room at the break, the Owls were outscored 15 to 6 at the start of the second-half. Rice got excellent looks at the basket, but only made one of its first seven field goals early in the second-half. After shooting 43 percent in the first 20 minutes, the Owls shot poorly in the second-half at 28.6 percent. For the game, Rice (7-22, 2-14) only made 9 of 17 free throws as well (52.9 percent).
A Maudess Fulton basket and a trey by D'Frantz Smart gave the Owls its last lead of the game at 43-42. Marshall (15-14, 8-8) then scored 10 unanswered points to forge a 52-43 lead that it would not relinquish. Two free throws by Morgan Mayse brought Rice to within six (54-48), but the Thundering Herd closed out the contest on a 6-3 run.
Fulton scored a game-high 18 points for Rice, while Emery Carter tallied 12 points.
Marshall was led by Alyssa Hammond's 12 points, while Tynikki Crook scored 11 and Alix Barnette added 10.
The Owls now ready for the Conference USA championship to be held in New Orleans, La., at Tulane's Fogelman Arena. The tournament gets underway on Thursday, March 5.
