
Lamar Beats Rice 82-66

Beaumont, Texas - The Rice Owls women's basketball team is now 2-7 on the season after losing 82-66 to Lamar at the Montangne Center. Darika Hill led four Cardinals in double-digits with 18 points, while Jenna Plumely and Kalis Lloyd scored 16 and 14 points respectively. Brittney Williams also added 11 points.
Junior forward Morgan Mayse led the Owls with 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in 31 minutes of action. Tara Watts scored 13 points and Jessica Goswitz added 10 points and 4 assists with 2 steals. Sophomore Brianna Hypolite scored 9 points and snared 6 rebounds.
Lamar outrebounded Rice 49 to 35, including 16 on the offensive on the offensive end, which led to 19 second-chance points for the Cardinals. Both teams shot 38 percent from the field, but Lamar made a whopping 28 free throws in 32 attempts. The Owls meanwhile, made nine of their 12 free throw attempts.
The score was deadlocked at 9-9 in the early going, when Lamar's Jasmine Henderson canned a three-pointer, breaking the tie and giving the Cardinals the lead for good. Lamar pulled even further away and went to the locker room with a 41-30 half-time lead as Lloyd led the Cardinals with 9 points and 7 rebounds. Mayse led the Owl attack with 9 points of her own, with 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
Rice got back into the game by outscoring Lamar 27 to 19 in the first 9:13 of the second-half. An old fashion three-point play by Jessica Gowitz brought the Owls to within three at 60-57 with 10:05 remaining in the contest. But, Lamar's Danielle Heithoff hit two free throws (8:29) to give Lamar a 62-57 lead. Two free throws by Jackie Stanley brought Rice to within five points once again (64-59) at 5:36, but the Cardinals went on a 14-3 run to put the game away.
Rice is next in action when it hosts Northwestern State on Dec. 28 and Hofstra on Dec. 30. Both games feature 7 p.m. tip-offs inside Tudor Fieldhouse.
