Any Rice baseball fan can recognize the distinctive pitching motion of Cole St. Clair, premier reliever for the Owls baseball team. He has been an integral part of many memorable Rice victories over the past several years.
"I came to Rice because I wanted to attend a prestigious university that offered me an opportunity to earn a great degree while simultaneously competing in baseball at the highest level," said St. Clair. He noted that Rice has fulfilled his expectations.
"I have been challenged academically and as a result developed a number of new skills that I am sure I will use for the rest of my life. I have also been given a great opportunity in baseball that will help me take my dream to the next level."
Although his major is Economics, St. Clair's strongest academic interest is in Religious studies.
"I have taken a number of religious studies courses," he said, "and feel that they have increased my understanding of myself and the world around me." He is sure that what he has learned in these course will have an important influence on his life after Rice.
For St. Clair, life following his graduation will be largely determined by the major league baseball draft is in June 2008. He aspires to follow a number of other Rice baseball player to the major leagues. His role as a relief pitcher this past summer for Team USA provided St. Clair with valuable experience in preparation for the next level of competition. Although his demanding academic and athletic schedules give him little free time, St. Clair enjoys cooking, the beach, golfing, surfing, volleyball, hiking, and anything that he can do outside.
"I also enjoy applying what I have learned in my religious studies courses to my life outlook and look for opportunities to discuss it as often as possible," he said. "Other than that I would consider myself an easygoing person and I am excited to see what my life will turn into."
St. Clair is destined to be one of Tomorrow's Leaders.
