Rice Falls to 10th at C-USA Championship

TEXARKANA, Ark. - Rice struggled on the back nine of the Texarkana Country Club course Monday, and drifted back to 10th in the team standings following the second round of the Conference USA Championship.
The Owls were playing even golf at the turn but were +11 on the back nine. Rice shot 299 as a team Monday and has a two-round score of 592 (+16) heading into the final 18 holes of the tournament slated for Tuesday. Just three stokes ahead of the Owls are East Carolina and UCF, currently tied for seventh while UTEP is two stokes ahead of Rice in ninth place.
Memphis, which had a five-stroke lead over the field after the first round, maintained its first-place standing Monday despite a +4 round. The Tigers played the final three holes at -3. Houston is currently second while Southern Miss and UAB are six strokes back of Memphis and tied for third.
Rice junior Kyle Kelley was one-under par at the turn Monday but three bogeys on the back nine left him with a 74 and a two-round score of 147 (+3). Kelley is currently tied for 18th.
Rice freshman Michael Whitehead and junior Bobby Thomure are part of an 11-player logjam currently tied for 22nd with two-round scores of 148 (+4).
Whitehead opened his round Monday with bogeys on three of his first five holes. He went on to play even golf at the back nine. He bogeyed the 13th hole and later birdied the par-four 17.
Thomure was the Owls' leading golfer after the first round, opening play with an even-par 72 on Sunday. And Monday Thomure was at two-under heading to the 10th hole. But he fell back to even par with a double bogey on the par-four 10 and starting with 14 played the next four holes at +5. Thomure closed out his round with a birdie on 18 finishing the day with a four-over par 76.
UAB's Zach Sucher shot a six-under 66 Monday and heads into Tuesday's final with a three-stroke lead over the field. Sucher shot a 68 Sunday and is 10-under par for the tournament (134). USM's Paul Apyan was three-under par Monday and is three strokes back of Sucher at -7 (137).
Rice will be paired with Marshall for Tuesday's final round. The first group will tee off at 8 a.m.
