WALLACE, N.C. - Rice junior Kyle Kelley shot a one-under par 71 and the Owls gained some ground in placing 11th as a team Sunday at the River Landing Intercollegiate hosted by North Carolina State.
Rice teed off from the 10th hole Sunday morning and Kelley registered birdies on the 13th, 15th and 17th holes during play on the back nine. After a bogey at four, Kelley played par golf the final five holes of his round. He finished in a tie for 30th at the 84-player tournament.
The Owls carded a five-over par 293 and finished with a three-round score of 892. Rice finished ahead of Conference USA rivals Tulsa and Houston in the team's final tune-up before the C-USA Championship April 20-22 in Texarkana, Ark.
Duke, ranked 16th nationally, shot a final round score of 277, 11 under par to win the team title by nine strokes over second place North Carolina State. C-USA member Memphis finished the tournament with a six-under par team score on the final round to place third.
Wake Forest's Webb Simpson and Duke's Michael Schachner both finished with 209s to tie for first at the end of regulation play. On the lone playoff hole, Schachner birdied to capture the individual title.
