ORLANDO, Fla. -- Junior forward Erin Scott scored both Rice goals, including the game-winner in double-overtime, to lead the Owls' soccer team to a 2-1 Conference USA road victory over defending regular season league champion UCF Friday evening in Orlando, Fla.
Scott scored the first goal of the game in the second half. In the 53rd minute the junior from Richardson, Tex., broke free with a long dribble along the left sideline, cut across the front of the goal inside the 18-yard line and fired a shot back to the inside left netting. The ball beat a diving UCF keeper for Scott's fourth goal of the season and 1-0 Rice lead.
The Knights turned up the offensive pressure, out-shooting Rice 16-2 in the second half. Owls goalkeeper Meghan Ekel made four saves in the period and her teammates chipped in with three deflections on close-range shots to help keep UCF off the board. In the 89th minute UCF's Brianna Schooley fielded a deflection and passed to forward Danielle Dos Santos. Dos Santos took a shot from inside the six and tied the game 1-1 with less than 90 seconds left in regulation.
Erkel came up with three more saves in the first overtime to force a final stanza. The Knights took two more shots on-goal that the Owls were able to turn away. In the game's 106th minute, freshman Hope Ward broke through traffic to take away a deflection. When the defenders surrounded the threat, Ward got the ball away to Scott charging in on the goal. Scott blasted a shot attempt from inside the 18 that found the back of the net to win the game.
The Knights out-shot Rice 27-11 for the contest and held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. The win snapped Rice's two-game losing streak and marked the Blue & Gray's first win over UCF in four career meetings. The Owls improved to 8-6-0 overall and 4-3-0 in C-USA play. UCF fell to 8-4-3 on the season and 3-2-2 in conference.
Rice concludes the current four-game C-USA road swing on Sunday (Oct. 19) in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Owls meet league foe Southern Miss at 1 pm. The Blue & Gray returns home to host Colorado College in a C-USA contest in its final home game of the regular season on Oct. 24.
