HOUSTON - The Rice women's tennis team completed a three match stretch over three days unblemished and turned in a dominating 7-0 victory against Texas-San Antonio Monday afternoon at Jake Hess Stadium on the Rice campus.
The Owls have started the spring season 3-0 four times in six seasons under head coach Roger White.
Julie Chao and Dominique Karas cruised to an 8-0 win over Karen Scida and Nathalie Wallin in the No. 1 position.
Emily Braid and Varsha Shiva-Shankar emerged with a hard-fought 8-6 at the bottom on the lineup. It was the second time in as many days that the No. 3 pair wrapped up the doubles point for the Owls.
Tiffany Lee and Rebecca Lin also notched their first doubles win of the spring season in the No. 2 spot. After splitting the first 16 games, Lee and Lin rolled in the tiebreaker 7-2.
"It was a good finish to our opening weekend," White said. "The girls competed hard. I was impressed with how much improvement we showed in our doubles play from the first match to the third match."
Rice also took care of business in singles action up and down the line. The Owls didn't lose a set and only dropped a combined 23 games over the six matches.
Lee dismissed Drabkova 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 hole, while Karas and Braid took down Wallin and Hasking 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 and No. 5, repectively.
Chao and Lin both stayed undefeated at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions. Chao took down Scida 6-0, 6-3 and Lin tallied a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Dedering.
Shiva-Shankar recorded a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Phillips to complete the sweep.
Rice hits the road for the first time on young season Friday at No. 20 Florida State. First serve is on-tap for 3pm CT against the Seminoles.
