The top 12 finishers in Wednesday's qualifying round will earn a spot in the final, which is scheduled for Thursday.
Rachel Greff is making her third straight trip to Sacramento for the NCAA meet, and is coming off a win at the Conference USA meet last month. Greff, the 2005 U.S. national junior champion and Pan American Junior silver medalist, has a best of 4.00m/13-1.5 in 2007 and shares the Rice school record at 4.12/13-6.25. The top 16 vaulters from the qualifying round advance to Friday's final.
Barbadian Shakera Reece will line up for the first round of the 100 meters, where she is the fastest freshman in the NCAA ranks with a best of 11.34. Reece set a Rice record while winning the CARIFTA Under-20 championships in the Turks & Caicos earlier this season. She also qualified for the NCAA meet in the 200, but chose to concentrate on the shorter sprint here. Reece will run in the fourth, and final, heat Wednesday. The top three finishers in each heat and the next six fastest times overall will advance to the semifinals later in the day.
