Rice is set to host the 12th Annual Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend. The three-day event is slated for Thursday-Saturday, May 10-12, at the Rice Track & Soccer Stadium, marking the first time in school history the Owls will play host to the championships.
Competition begins Thursday with the first day of the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon, as well as finals of the men's and women's hammer throw and the men's and women's 10,000 meters.
The Owls will be looking for big first-day points in the women's 10,000, where seven Rice runners will be led by junior Marissa Daniels. Daniels has already provisionally qualified for the NCAA nationals with a conference-leading time of 34:07.04, and she was second in the event last year at the league meet. Last year's C-USA 3000 steeplechase champion, Kate Gorry, will also be a medal threat for the Owls after qualifying for the NCAA national meet in 2006 in the 10k. Susie Barrows has produced personal bests at distances from 1500 to 5000 already this season, while student government president Laura Kelley and last year's sixth-placer, Lea Garcia, will also contend for points. Amanda Reineck and Leah McKay round out the Owls' entrants.
Rice's men's hopes in the longest race on the track rest with four able runners, led by Justin Maxwell. The Houston Westside grad has a best of 31:28.02 this year. Alex Solomon and Brad Morris bring experience to the event, and freshman Andrew Zukoski is poised for a breakthrough on the Owls' home track.
In the heptathlon, Andrea Jackson and freshman Britney Blodget will battle 10 league foes for places in the top eight, and freshman Katie Dollinger will open her C-USA championship career in the hammer.
All session championship tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for youth, while single session tickets are $10 and $5. C-USA students with a valid I.D. are admitted free.
