HOUSTON -- Heading into the final week of the regular season, the Rice women were swept by No. 19 Pepperdine in dual-match action on Monday afternoon at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
Rice freshman Julie Chao had her upset bid averted at No. 1 singles, where she pushed 56th-ranked Sylvia Kosakowski to the edge. The Wave rallied back against the determined Owl for a 1-6, 6-3, 12-10 decision. Chao was looking for another upset earlier in the day with partner Tiffany Lee. Pepperdine's No. 29 tandem of Kosakowski and Bianca Dulgheru finally overcame the upstart Owls for an 8-6 decision.
Rice wraps up the regular season on Friday in double-header action. The Owls first host Texas-San Antonio at 11 am, then face Abilene Christian at 4 pm. Both matches are slated for the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
