Rice University is mourning the loss of Jonathan Bailey, a junior at Sid Richardson College. He was stabbed to death April 5 in College Station, Texas, where he had just celebrated his 22nd birthday with his twin brother.
Jonathan was walk-on member of the Owls basketball team, and head coach Willis Wilson met with Jonathan's mother and another brother in Houston the morning after the incident.
"Obviously, we are shocked at this tragedy," Wilson said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Jonathan's family. Every member of our athletics community is grieving at the loss of a teammate and a friend."
Bailey transfered to Rice for the start of the 2005-06 season from Texas State Univeristy and redshirted. He played in four games for the Owls this past season, playing a total of 10 minutes. He scored all of his four points in the Owls opener against Paul Quinn College.
Bailey's twin, Janson, was also injured and is being treated at St. Joseph's Hospital. College Station detectives arrested a local suspect for the murder. They are continuing their investigation, and additional charges are possible.
"Coming so soon after the death of Rice student Parker Redman, this is a heartbreaking time for all of us.," said Robin Forman, dean of undergraduates. "I am confident that we will again demonstrate the strength of our community by coming together for mutual support."
Forman encouraged students to share their grief or any concerns with their college masters or the Rice Counseling Center.
A memorial service for Bailey is being planned.
