Houston -
Winning was the word for the day Thursday as Rice's women took gold in eight events to dominate action at the Rice Twilight Meet, the final tune-up before the Owls host the Conference USA Championships May 10-12 at the Rice Track & Soccer Stadium.
The Owls swept the relays with season-bests in both, qualifying for the NCAA Regionals with a 45.29 in the 4x100, and clocking 3:43.87 to win the 4x400. LaToya Adekoya, who also had a career-best in the 200 at 24.97, ran the lead leg for Rice's sprint relay, joining with Shakera Reece, Funmi Jimoh and Desarie Walwyn for the victory.
Jimoh was an individual winner, too, nabbing top honors in the high jump with a 1.65 meters/5-5 clearance. Other golds came from Rachel Greff in the pole vault (3.80m/12-5.5), Naquanza Alfred in the 800 (2:12.40), Lennie Waite in the 1500 (4:33.56), and Kate Gorry in the 3000 steeplechase (10:51.95). Lacee Carmon zipped to the win in the 100 hurdles with a season-best 14.65, and also produced a season-best of 5.89m/19-4 to take fourth in the long jump.
Junior distance ace Marissa Daniels dropped down to the 1500, producing a personal-best 4:34.23 to place second, while Susie Barrows also had a lifetime-best in fifth at 4:38.69. Chandra Ewing, who anchored the 4x400, was second in the 100 hurdles with a season-best 14.89, and Jessica Cox notched a PR 2:15.36 in the 800.
