East Lansing, Mich. - The Rice Owls golf team finished with an 892 (297-296-299) to place 13th at the 40th Fossum/Spartan Invitational held at Forest Akers West Golf Course (par-72, 7,013-yards).
Leading the 13-team field after Saturday's 36 holes at The Fossum Invitational, the 29th-ranked Michigan State men's golf team extended their lead to take a 14 shot victory with a 54-hole total of 23-under-par 841 (279-284-278). Taking home individual medalist honors in a three-way tie was Michigan State's Matt Harmon (73-66-67) and Jack Newman (67-72-67) and Xavier's Jason Kokrak 69-68-69) all tied with for first with a 10-under score of 206.
Rice was led by sophomore Erik Petersen. Petersen tied for 38 with a final round one-over 73 to finish at 221 (74-74-73). Freshman Michael Buttacavoli was next at tied for 43rd with a 223 (76-74-73). Junior Addison Awe tied for 55 with a 226 (74-72-80), while sophomore Bobby Thomure was one stroke back at 227 (73-77-77). Senior Heon Young Lee tied for 63 with a 230 score (78-76-76).
The Spartans shot a final round 278 (-10), to increase their lead over second-place finisher Charlotte who posted a three round total of 9-under-par 855. Following Charlotte, Xavier came in third with a 6-under-par 858 and Wisconsin rounded out the top four teams with a 4-under-par 860 total.
The Owls now prepare for next week's Conference USA championship held at Texarkana, Texas.
