Houston -

Rice freshman Shakera Reece was selected as Conference USA's female indoor track and field Newcomer of the Year in a poll of league coaches, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Reece, a native of St. Lucy, Barbados, was the third-fastest freshman in the nation over 60 meters, with a best of 7.39 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA indoor championships. She placed fourth in the event at the C-USA championships and added a fifth-place effort in the 200m (24.68). She was also a part of the Owls' 4x400-meter relay team that guided Rice to its first C-USA Indoor Women's Championship.
