Owls, Sooner Win Day Two at 46th Annual Rice Invitational

HOUSTON -- In a day lengthened by showers on campus, action ultimately moved indoors and the Owls defeated William & Mary 4-1 while Oklahoma downed Middle Tennessee State 4-2 in the second day of action at the 46th Annual Rice Invitational on Saturday at the Downtown Club at the Met in Houston.
In the Owls' match, Ben Harknett struck first with a 6-1, 7-6 (6) win against the Tribes' Colin O'Brien at No. 1 singles. The last match to take the court, Jason Mok made quick work of Richard Wardell at No. 6 singles, blasting his opponent 6-1, 6-1. Filip Zivojinovic then put Rice ahead 3-0 with his 6-1, 7-6 (4) triumph at No. 5, downing Marwan Ramadan 6-1, 7-6 (4). After the Tribe got on the scoreboard with a three-set win at No. 3, Tobias Scheil clinched the win for the Owls with his 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win against Alexander Zuck at No. 4.
The Sooners and Blue Raiders began doubles at 9 am at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium, but were quickly delayed as rain began moving through the Houston area. Doubles play finally resumed at 3:30 pm indoors with MTSU taking the point. Oklahoma stormed back in singles, winning the top three matches, the first three to get on to the limited courts. The Raiders scored another win at No. 4 singles before Federico Chavarria closed out the win for the Sooners at No. 5, beating Alex McCann 6-1, 6-0.
Rice faces off with Middle Tennessee State, while William & Mary takes on Oklahoma in the final day of the Rice Invitational. With rain projected for Sunday afternoon, both matches are slated to begin at 9 am at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
