
Owls Dominant at TSU Relays

Funmi Jimoh won two individual titles and ran the lead-off leg on Rice's victorious 4x100-meter relay as the Owls dominated the Texas Southern Relays this weekend at wind-swept Durley Stadium. Jimoh won the long jump Friday with the third-best jump in the world this year in any conditions, spanning 6.62m/21-8.75 with an aiding wind of 3.0 meters-per-second. The maximum allowable wind for record purposes is 2.0 mps. Her jump is the second-best ever by a Rice athlete, trailing only Alice Falaiye's school-record 6.63/21-9 in 2000.
Jimoh also won the 100 hurdles Saturday with an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 13.72 seconds into a 5.3 mps wind. She teamed up with Shakera Reece, Brittany Washington and Desarie Walwyn for the win in the 4x100, as the squad use strong second and anchor legs to clock 45.77. Reece came back to win the 100 in 11.97 with a 6.7 mps head wind, with Walwyn fourth at 12.12.
Friday night, the Owls won the 4x800 relay in 9:22.36 with a team of Lennie Waite, Vicki Walker, Naquanza Alfred and Jessica Cox, and they added gold in the distance medley relay with a time of 12:31.94. Alfred won the individual crown in the 800, battling gale-force winds to finish in 2:15.10.
Chandra Ewing continued her string of impressive showings with a win in the 400 hurdles, rounding the oval in 60.78 to qualify for the NCAA regionals. Freshman Nicole Mericle capped off the meet with a win in the 1500, clocking 4:38.24, with Waite second at 4:39.92.
Rice captured more gold in the field events with wins by Rachel Greff and Jenny Glover. Greff met the NCAA regional qualifying standard with a 3.81/12-6 clearance in the pole vault, while Glover had a wind-aided lifetime-best of 12.32/40-5 to take the triple jump and qualify for the NCAA regional meet. Freshman Eunique Hamilton placed second in the triple jump with a windy 12.22/40-1.25.
Other medalists for the Owls were Ulrika Hinson, who was second in the discus (41.65/136-7) and third in the javelin (41.39/135-9), and Jimoh, who was third in the high jump at 5-4. The Owls claimed bronze medals in the 4x200 relay and sprint medley relay.

Nacogdoches -- Two Rice athletes achieved NCAA regional qualifying marks at the Dogwood Invitational at Stephen F. Austin, led by Kate Gorry's win in the 3000-meter steeplechase Friday night with a lifetime-best 10:44.61. Ulrika Hinson, who picked up two medals Friday at the TSU Relays in Houston, won the javelin with a season-best 44.58/146-3 to qualify for the regional meet, and was third in the discus and fourth in the shot put.
