HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Mark Dorris scored 18 points and had a key defensive play to lead Marshall to a 69-64 victory over Rice on Wednesday evening.
Markel Humphrey added 16 points, including two key baskets down the stretch, and Tre Whitted had 10 points for the Thundering Herd (12-17, 7-8 Conference USA).
Morris Almond was the only Rice player in double figures with 29 points and a game-high nine rebounds. The senior is third in the nation in scoring.
After Almond dominated the early part of the second half, the two teams traded baskets in the final three minutes. Humphrey scored on consecutive layups in the final 90 seconds to give Marshall a 67-64 lead.
After calling a timeout, sophomore Cory Pflieger got Dorris in the air, but Jean-Francois Bro Grebe jumped out and forced Pflieger to hesitate his shot.
The hesitation was all Dorris needed to get back and block the shot while controlling the rebound. He then sank two free throws to give Marshall the victory.
Rice (14-14, 8-7) now hosts Tulsa on Saturday at 2:05 pm to conclude the regular season.
