Houston -
Carmen Guzman scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead UAB past Rice 79-66 in Conference USA women's basketball action Thursday at Autry Court. Valeriya Berezhynska led the Owls with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, but Rice suffered a big blow early in the second half when leading scorer and all-time leading rebounder Lauren Neaves suffered a broken nose and had to leave the game.
The loss dropped Rice (16-12 overall, 9-6 in C-USA) to fifth in the league standings, while UAB (16-11, 11-4) held on to second behind Tulane. The top four teams in the regular season get a bye in the first round of the C-USA tournament, scheduled for next week at Tulsa.
Diamond Rogers also had a double-double for the Blazers with 17 points and 10 boards, and Kadie Riverin chipped in 12 points and six assists for the Owls.
Rice hosts Memphis Saturday at 5 pm in the final women's home game at Autry Court. Neaves and fellow seniors Samantha Stovall and Krystal Frazier will be honored in pre-game ceremonies, and all-time great Marla Brumfield will be recognized at halftime as part of the Owls' celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
