LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Senior Brittany Massengale and junior Carlyann Miller both won two events to lead the Rice swim team on the first day of action in the opening meet of the 2007-08 season, a double-dual against Northern Colorado and host New Mexico State Friday evening in Las Cruces, N.M. At the halfway point of the meet, the Owls lead Northern Colorado 134-103 and host New Mexico State 127-114. The meet concludes after 15 more events on Saturday morning.
Rice won six of the day's 11 swim events. In addition to the Owls' multi-winners of Massengale and Miller the freestyle, sophomore Angela Wo won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:11.15. Freshman Ashten Ackerman won the 400-individual medley (4:39.69) in her first-ever competition at the collegiate level. The former high school standout from Kissimmee, Fla., came back and finished second out a field of 14 entrants in the 200-breaststroke.
Massengale swept both distance events, including a 1-2 Rice finish with junior Caitlin Warner in the 500-free. Massengale coasted to a win in the 1,000 by more than 20 seconds over second place and she swam a sub-five-minute 500 on the opening day of the new season.
Miller was sound and solid with wins in the 100- (52.52) and the 200-free (1:55.24). She and Keri Hyde went 1-2 for Rice in the 200. Hyde then came back to go 1-2 with Wo in the 200-butterfly.
The same three teams will be back for the second day of the meet at NMSU on Saturday (Oct. 13). Saturday's meet features an extended, 15-event schedule with different distances from Friday's double-dual. Saturday's meet begins at 11 am (Central Time).
