HOUSTON -- After sweeping both distance events at the LSU Quadrangular last weekend in Baton Rouge, La., Rice junior Brittany Massengale has been named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week for Jan. 23-29 the league announced Tuesday from its headquarters in Dallas.
Massengale won the 500-freetsyle with a time of 5:00.10 and the 1,000-freestyle with a season-best time of 10:09.12 that is one of the fastest marks in the conference this year. Her individual wins helped the Owls win two of the quadrangular's three dual meets. The Owls defeated Conference USA rival Houston 189-152 and the University of New Orleans 255-59, but fell to meet host LSU 216-131. Rice closed out the dual meet portion of its 2006-07 schedule with a 10-6 record, the most wins for the Owls in the last five years.
It is the third time in Massengale's college career to earn C-USA Swimmer of the Week honors. The Alma, Ark., native is also the third Owl this season to earn the award. Sophomore sprinter Diane Gu was the Nov. 8 C-USA honoree and freshman Erin Mattson was the league's Dec. 4 award winner.
