Houston -
Five Rice women's track and field athletes were selected to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) all-academic team, and the Owls were one of 76 teams honored for achieving a team grade-point average of better than 3.0 during the 2006 indoor and outdoor seasons.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, an athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher and must have met the NCAA Division I regional or national qualifying standard in her event.
Seniors Sarah Yoder (3000-meter steeplechase) and Flo Nwagwu (high jump) led the way for the Owls, and were joined on the all-academic team by Marissa Daniels (10,000-meters), Rachel Greff (pole vault) and Desarie Walwyn (100-meters).
"We have always tried to emphasize academics in our program," said head coach Jim Bevan. "At Rice it is especially important for our team to understand that academic success is the number-one priority. To be a national-class athlete and a great student is symbolic of Rice's commitment to excellence."
Rice's five honorees was the most of any Conference USA school.
