FORT WORTH -- Junior forward Clory Martin scored the lone goal in the 26th minute and senior goalkeeper Amy McClintock made the margin stand up on the way to the soccer team's season-opening 1-0 win over host TCU Friday night in Fort Worth. Martin corralled a pass from Christine Petric 15 yards in front of the goal and beat the TCU keeper with a shot low to the left side.
McClintock posted a career-high nine saves on the way to the complete game win. The nine saves were the most by a Rice keeper in two years, as the Owls won their season opener for the year in a row. The victory was only the second time in school history for the Blue and Gray to post a shutout on opening day.
TCU almost escaped the shutout and tied the game in the first half, but some heroic team-defensive work made the difference. With less than 30 seconds left in the first half, McClintock went to her left to deflect a ball away from traffic in the box. She cleared the threat but TCU's Casey Glass played the carrom and took a hard shot to a vacated right side as the clock continued to tick down. The Horned Frog's shot on goal would not go for a score, however, as senior Vanessa Serrano alertly took a supporting defensive position on the back line and blasted the shot on goal out of harm's way.
Rice continued to turn back the TCU offense in the second half while rotating between different players in its attacking third. Ten different Owls recorded a total of 14 shots on the night. The Blue & Gray held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Owls (1-0-0) next host Mississippi State in its home-opener on Sunday, Aug. 27. Start time is slated for 1 pm at the Rice/Track Soccer Stadium.
