Sacramento, Calif. -
Rice senior Krystal Robinson closed out her collegiate career with a third-place finish in the discus Friday at the NCAA track and field championships at Hornet Stadium. Robinson, who was fourth last year, had a best of 54.38 meters/178-5 on her second attempt and held the lead until the end of the fifth round, when Nebraska's Dace Ruskule unleashed a 55.13/180-10 to claim the gold. Ruskule also beat Robinson at the Midwest regional championships two weeks ago. Alabama's Beth Mallory, the 2005 champion, had a final-round effort of 54.74/179-7 to take the silver.
Robinson's finish is the best ever by a Rice woman in the discus at the national championships.
The Championships finish Saturday, with Rachel Greff carrying Rice's hopes in the pole vault final.
