
Five Owls Earn NCAA Berths

Five Rice women have earned spots in the 2006 NCAA national track and field championships, scheduled for June 7-10 at Sacramento, Calif. The NCAA announced automatic and at-large qualifiers Tuesday, and the Owls had three auto bids and two at-large bids.
Krystal Robinson, who was fourth last year, was second in the discus at the Midwest regional last weekend to earn an automatic bid. Her best of 55.94 meters/183-6 ranks her 10th on the entry list, with Midwest champion Dace Ruskule of Nebraska the list-leader at 59.07/193-9.
Pole vaulter Rachel Greff, a 2005 NCAA qualifier as a freshman and the reigning U.S. junior national champion, was fourth at regionals to earn an auto bid, and enters nationals ranked 17th with a best of 4.12/13-6.25. Chelsea Johnson of UCLA tops the vault entries at 4.60/15-1, which is the collegiate record.
In the 1500-meters, Callie Wells earned an auto bid with her fifth-place effort at the regional meet. She ranks 28th on the entry list with a best of 4:24.67. Wells was an indoor national qualifier in the mile in March.
Marissa Daniels will make a return trip to nationals, this time in the 10,000-meters, where she will be joined by Kate Gorry. Daniels has a best of 33:59.56 and is ranked 19th going in, while Gorry clocked 34:20.35 to earn an at-large bid. She is ranked 27th entering the national meet.
College Sports Television (CSTV) will air live coverage from day three of the event on Friday, June 9 from 7-9 pm. CBS Sports will pick up live coverage on the final day, Saturday, June 10, from 2:30-5 pm.
