Austin -
Krystal Robinson finished second in the discus and two other Rice women also automatically qualified for the national meet on the final day of the NCAA Midwest Regional at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Robinson had a best of 55.76 meters/182-11 on her fifth throw to secure her spot at the NCAA meet at Sacramento, Calif., June 7-10. She became the Owls' first-ever discus all-America last year with a fourth-place finish.
In the pole vault, Rachel Greff earned her second straight trip to nationals, clearing 4.06/13-3.75 to place fourth. The sophomore was the 2005 U.S. national Junior champion and won silver at the Pan American Junior championships in Canada.
Sophomore Callie Wells had a strong finish over the final 200-meters to place fifth in the 1500-meters at 4:26.15. Wells was an NCAA indoor national qualifier in the mile earlier this year.
Sarah Yoder was in position to grab an automatic qualifying spot in the 3000-meter steeplechase before she fell on the fourth lap. Yoder got up and got back in the lead pack, but faded toward the end of the race and ended up sixth at 10:48.16. Kate Gorry was ninth with a personal-best 10:50.51 in only her second-ever try at the event.
The Owls finished tied for 12th in the team standings with 24 points.
