Robinson, Greff Lead Owls to NCAA Regionals

Senior Krystal Robinson was Rice's first-ever NCAA all-America in the women's discus with a fourth-place finish last year, and she will lead a group of eight Owls looking for 2006 national championships berths at the NCAA Midwest Regional at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin this weekend. Robinson, who won the Conference USA gold by more than 30-feet two weeks ago, is ranked third in the region entering the meet with a best of 55.94 meters/183-6.
The top five finishers in each event at the regional meet qualify for participation in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 7-10 at Sacramento, Calif. The NCAA may also award a minimum of five at-large bids in each event for the national championship meet.
Rachel Greff, the 2005 U.S. junior national pole vault champion and Pan American Junior silver medalist, won the Conference USA title in El Paso and tied the school record with a 4.12/13-6.25 clearance. She is equal third in the Midwest rankings and will be looking to return to the NCAA national meet after qualifying as a freshman last year.
Conference champion Marissa Daniels is the fourth-fastest entrant in the 5000-meters at 16:28.87, a time she recorded at the Mt. SAC Relays in mid-April to set a school record. She has also provisionally qualified for the NCAA nationals in the 10,000-meters, which is not contested at the regional level.
Two Owls are racing in the 3000-meter steeplechase, with school record-holder Sarah Yoder making a return visit. Yoder has a best of 10:31.57 this year and is ranked seventh in the region. Kate Gorry won the Conference USA title in her debut in the event and is ranked 12th coming in. She is also a provisional national qualifier in the 10,000-meters.
Sophomore Callie Wells won the C-USA gold in the 1500-meters at El Paso and will enter the regional meet ranked seventh at 4:24.67. An NCAA indoor national qualifier in the mile in March, Wells was named the league's indoor MVP after winning the mile and 3000 at the C-USA indoor championships.
In the 100-meters, Desarie Walwyn is ranked 10th coming into the meet with a best of 11.57. She was seventh in the dash at the C-USA championships and added a sixth-place finish in the 200.
High jumper Flo Nwagwu rounds out the Owls' entries, making her second straight trip to regionals. She is tied for 11th in the Midwest rankings at 1.75/5-8.75 and has a personal-best of 1.78/5-10.
