Houston -
Misty Murphy has been promoted to associate head coach for the Rice women's basketball program, head coach Greg Williams announced Thursday. Murphy, 33, helped lead the Owls to the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament this year in her first season as an assistant to Williams.
"I am very pleased to be able to move Misty up to associate head coach," Williams said. "She has a record of success as a head coach at different levels, and she was instrumental in our success this season. She will be an outstanding Division I head coach in the near future, and this is a step in helping her achieve that goal."
Murphy came to Rice from Colorado State-Pueblo, where she served as head coach from 2001-2005. In her four years with the ThunderWolves, she compiled a 66-46 record, including the first 20-win season in school history. At Sheridan Community College in Wyoming, Murphy tallied a 42-19 record in two years and won two conference titles. She began her coaching career as an assistant to Williams at Colorado State, where she earned all-Western Athletic Conference honors as a senior in 1994.
"I am very humbled to be named associate head coach," Murphy said. "I am thankful to coach Williams and the Rice athletic administration for this opportunity."
Rice finished 18-14 overall and was second in the Conference USA standings and tournament. The Owls were 11-5 in league play, including a nine-game win streak.
