Owls Lead C-USA Championships After First Day

Marissa Daniels and Sarah Yoder finished second and third in the 10,000-meters and Lea Garcia was sixth to put Rice's women in first place after the opening day of the Conference USA track and field championships Thursday at Kidd Field. Daniels shared the lead with C-USA cross country champion Elizabeth Ambrus of UAB until late in the race before Ambrus pulled away to win in 35:39.04. Daniels clocked 36:07.01, with Yoder in third at 37:31.95. Garcia finished at 39:48.31.
The Owls scored 17 points to lead the team title chase, with UAB and UTEP tied for second with 14.
After the first day of the heptathlon, Andrea Jackson was sixth with 2,522 points. She clocked 15.84 in the 100-meter hurdles, cleared 1.42 meters/4-7.75 in the high jump, threw the shot put 8.92/29-3.25 and finished at 26.03 in the 200-meters.
Competition resumes Friday at 8:30 am with the heptathlon long jump. The pole vault starts at 3:30 pm, and running events get under way at 4:30 pm with prelims in the 1500-meters.
