Walnut, Calif. -
Sophomore Marissa Daniels moved to number-three on the Rice all-time list and qualified provisionally for the NCAA championships with a second-place finish in the 10,000-meters Friday at the Mt. SAC Relays. Daniels lowered her lifetime best to 33:59.56, just outside the automatic qualifying standard for the national meet. Only Julie Jiskra (33:22.14 in 1991) and Catherine Spradley (33:58.84 in 1986) have run faster for Rice.
Teammate Kate Gorry also turned in a lifetime best in the race, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA meet with a sixth-place finish at 34:20.35, the fourth-fastest ever by a Rice runner.
Callie Wells set a lifetime best in the 1500-meters with her 4:24.67, the seventh-fastest ever for the Owls, and she placed seventh overall after taking third in her section. Her time qualifies her for the NCAA regionals.
Action at the meet concludes Saturday, with Rice highlights to include 2005 NCAA fourth-placer Krystal Robinson in the invitational discus.
