Houston -
Sophomore Rice speedster Desarie Walwyn won the 100-meters and 200 at the 24th Annual Victor Lopez Bayou Classic Saturday at the Rice Track and Soccer Stadium, qualifying for the NCAA regional meet in May in the shorter dash. Walwyn clocked 11.57 in the 100, and won the furlong by more than half a second at 24.24.
"It's always fun to compete in front of your home crowd," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "The team took advantage of that today and I was extremely happy with a lot of our performances. Desarie showed what potential she has to become a national-class sprinter, and we also had some nice wins in the field events."
Last year's NCAA fourth-placer in the discus, Krystal Robinson, easily won her specialty for the Owls, spinning the platter 50.85 meters/166-10 to win by 18 feet. Ulrika Hinson, who was fourth in the discus at 43.32/142-1, took gold in the shot put with a toss of 12.89/42-3.5.
Pole vaulter Rachel Greff was the top collegiate finisher in that event, which was won by former Rice star Beth Spearman with a clearance at 4.27/14-0. Greff, a sophomore who won the USA Junior national title last summer, cleared 3.95/12-11.5 to place third overall and qualify for the NCAA regional meet.
Lacee Carmon had a lifetime best in the long jump, spanning 5.91/19-4.75 to place third overall and finish as the top collegian, while Jenny Glover and Shardee Caesar finished 2-3 in the triple jump, both leaping 11.83/38-9.75. Flo Nwagwu was fourth in the high jump with a clearance at 1.70/5-7.
Caesar teamed up with Chandra Ewing, Lennie Waite and Claire Shorall for a surprising win in the 4x400, clocking 3:55.21 to beat Houston by more than two seconds. The Owls also finished as the top collegiate team in the 4x100, with a squad of Nina Mayes, Carmon, LaToya Adekoya and Walwyn finishing second overall at 47.10.
Ewing lowered her personal best in the 400 hurdles for the second week in a row, running 62.06 to finish third overall, and Waite crossed the line at 2:14.07 for fifth in the 800. Adekoya was fourth in the 100 at 11.88.
The Owls return to action at the Texas Relays in Austin Thursday.
