Houston -
More than 1,500 of the top university and high school track and field athletes from Texas and around the nation will compete Friday and Saturday in the 24th Annual Victor Lopez Bayou Classic at the Wendel Ley Track in Rice's Track and Soccer Stadium.
The meet, which was renamed last summer in honor of retired head coach Victor Lopez, features many of Houston's best prep athletes as well as top university teams including Rice, Harvard, Iowa State and Houston.
"We are looking forward to another great meet," said Owls head coach Jim Bevan. "This meet has such a great tradition, and we love having so many top high school and college athletes come and compete. It's a good way to see who the top teams are around Houston, and for us it is an opportunity to compete in front of our home crowd."
High school running prelims and field event finals start at 2:30 pm Friday, with the university distance carnival set to kick off at 7:40. Saturday's field events begin at 8 am with the men's hammer throw, and running finals start at noon.
