HOUSTON -- The Rice women lost a tough 4-3 decision to 53rd-ranked, and longtime conference foe, SMU on Friday afternoon at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
The Owls took the early lead by winning the doubles point. The senior tandem of Medeja Egic and Blair DiSesa scored a victory at the top spot, defeating Natalia Bubien and Lana Kouzmenko 8-5. At number two, sophomore Kimberley Patenaude and freshman Alanna Rodgers clinched the point as they downed Monica Neveklovska and Georgiana Marta 8-5.
DiSesa then improved the Owls' lead to 2-0 as she quickly dispatched Kouzmenko with a 6-1, 6-2 win at number-one singles. The Mustangs scored a win at five singles before sophomore Christine Dao added to Rice's lead with her 7-6 (1), 6-2 victory against Bubien at the two position. SMU then rallied in three setters at the three, four and six spots to avoid the upset.
The Owls return to action Saturday at 3 pm when they host Conference USA foe Tulsa at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
