Houston -
Krystal Robinson and Ulrika Hinson swept the top two spots in the discus and Rachel Greff was the top collegian in the pole vault to highlight Rice women's track and field performances on the first day of the Texas Southern University Relays Friday at Durley Field.
Robinson, last year's NCAA fourth-placer in the discus for the Owls, opened her senior campaign in a big way with a last-round toss of 52.30 meters/171-7 to win by more than 25-feet over teammate Hinson, who was second with a personal-best throw of 44.50/146-0. Robinson's mark qualified her for the NCAA regional meet in May. Hinson added a silver medal in the javelin with a 41.91/137-6 effort. The discus and javelin competitions were held at the University of Houston.
Greff, the 2005 USA junior national champion and Pan Am Juniors silver medalist, battled headwinds to clear 3.49/11-5.25 and finish as the top collegian in the event. In other field event action, high jumper Flo Nwagwu cleared 1.65/5-5 to capture silver.
On the track, Chandra Ewing had the third-fastest qualifying time, winning her heat in a personal-best 63.70 to advance to Saturday's final. The Owls also had two runners qualify for the finals in the 100-meter hurdles, with Lacee Carmon clocking 15.56 and Andrea Jackson crossing the line at 15.62.
Rice's 1600-meter sprint medley relay team raced to a fifth-place finish in 4:04.24 with LaToya Adekoya and Jackson running the lead-off 200 legs, Desarie Walwyn the 400, and Lennie Waite the 800 anchor leg.
