Houston - New Rice coach Todd Graham will welcome 72 players to the first day of the Owls' 2006 spring football practice Wednesday, the first of 15 workout dates allowed by the NCAA.
Instilling confidence and toughness are the top two goals Graham and his staff hope to achieve in the off-season work. "You're going to see a very positive, upbeat, very intense, enthusiastic practice," said Graham. "We're going to build upon the things that we do well."
Rice returns 48 lettermen from last year's squad, including 10 offensive and six defensive starters. Heading the group will be running back Quinton Smith, a second-team all-Conference USA selection in 2005.
There will be no contact drills during the first two workouts Wednesday and Friday, but the squad will don full pads for Saturday morning's workout. Scrimages are scheduled for March 25 and April 1. The spring schedule will conclude with the annual spring game/scrimmage on April 8.
All practices will be held in Rice Stadium or on the grass practice field north of the Stadium, and will be open to Rice fans, students and alumni.
