COLLEGE STATION -- Playing their fifth-straight road match against a top-40 foe, the 57th-ranked Rice women fell to 31st-ranked Texas A&M 5-2 Tuesday evening in College Station.
The Owls jumped out to an early advantage in doubles as sophomores Christine Dao and Tiffany Lee teamed for an 8-5 win against Tiffany Clifford and Raquel Wagner at number three. The Aggies rebounded with an 8-6 win at the top spot, before clinching the doubles point with a tough 9-7 decision at number two.
After Texas A&M went up 2-0 with a win at number six singles, senior Medeja Egic got Rice on the scoreboard with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Tiffany Clifford at five. The Aggies then scored wins at one and three singles to secure the team victory.
In the final match of the day, Dao posted a big second-set rally to send her match with Sarah Foster to a third frame. With the score knotted at 2-2, Dao charged ahead to claim a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory at the two postion.
After playing eight of their last nine on the road, the Owls (3-8) return home this weekend to host Texas State on Friday and Texas-Arlington on Saturday. Both matches are slated for 1:30 pm starts at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
