Houston - Jess Loepp will coach the safeties on Owl head football coach Todd Graham's first staff, Graham announced Monday.
Loepp, 28, will replace Randall McCray on the Rice defensive staff. McCray resigned this week to become the defensive line coach at Wisconsin. Loepp had been scheduled to coach the Rice tight ends, but he had coached the safeties at Tulsa during Graham's tenure as the Hurricane's defensive coordinator (2003-05).
"This will be an easy transition, because we know that Jess is a quality secondary coach," said Graham. "We hate to lose Randall off our staff, but coaching in the Big 10 is a chance he felt he shouldn't refuse."
"This is an opportunity I couldn't pass up for my family," said McCray. "This is an impressive staff and group of players here at Rice, and I know they'll have a great chance to win games and championships next year and in years to come."
McCray had joined the Rice staff on Feb. 6 after three seasons at the University of Toledo. He was also scheduled to be the recruiting coordinator at Rice, but Graham said a decision would be forthcoming on who would now fill that role.
Graham added that he hopes to name a new tight ends coach in the near future.
