Rice running back Quinton Smith, he piled up 243 all purpose yards as the Owls won their third straight last Saturday, has been named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week.
Smith becomes the third member of the Owls offensive attack to be honored this season. Chase Clement earned the nod after the win over Army and Jarett Dillard was selected after his performance against UAB.
Smith rushed for 171 yards on a career-high 31 carries and a pair of scores and caught four passes for 72 yards and another touchdown to lead the Owls to the win over the Miners. His 243 all-purpose yards were the 10th best total in school history. Seven of his 31 carries came on the Owls' final drive of the game, a 19-play effort that exhausted the last 7:20 on the clock after UTEP had closed to within six points.
After being held to a -10 yards rushing against Texas, Smith has rushed for 664 yards in the last six contests, including 353 in the last two. He is averaging 123.4 yards rushing in conference games (third best in the league) and 162.4 all-purpose yards (second best).
With his recent rushing explosion, Smith has vaulted from ninth to fourth on the Owls career rushing list and he needs just 162 yards to become the first Owl to post back-to-back 1,000 yard rushing seasons since Trevor Cobb put together three straight 1,000 seasons from 1990-92.
