Freshman placekicker Clark Fangmeier was named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week l after kicking a 40-yard field goal with three seconds left to beat East Carolina and keep Rice's hopes of a dramatic run to a bowl bid alive.
The 40-yarder was a career best for Fangmeier, who also connected on his only PAT in the game. The walkon from Northland Christian School in Houston is a perfect 29x29 this year in extra points, second only to Michigan State's Brett Swenson (33x33) among freshman kickers. Fangmeier's 29 PATs are the third most in Rice history by a freshman kicker, trailing only Johnny Bagwell (35x35 in 1993) and Brennan Landry (31x33 in 2002). They also are the seventh best overall total in Rice history.
Fangmeier is the fourth Owl to garner an individual C-USA honor this football season. Chase Clement, Jarett Dillard and Quinton Smith were all named the Offensive Player of the Week earlier this year.
