WEEK SEVEN: The Rice Owls finally get to touch the green, green turf of home for something other than practice as they host UAB (3-3, 2-0 and leading C-USA East). This is the second meeting ever between the two schools, and the first between them in Houston. UAB won the initial contest, 45-26 last year in Birmingham.
WEEK SIX RECAP: The Owls continued to produce numbers on offense, but Tulane's no-huddle attack produced even greater numbers in a 38-24 win in the Superdome. Chase Clement threw for 271 yards and Jarett Dillard extended his streak by catching a TD pass in his 8th straight game for the Owls.
LOOKING AT UAB: UAB is coming off a hard-fought 35-29 win over Memphis last Saturday as the Blazers turned in their best offensive game of the 2006 season to date. The Blazers' offense got untracked in the game as UAB totaled 413 yards on offense, including 279 rushing. Corey White (129) and Marculus Elliott (109) both eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark in the game, marking the first time since the 2001 season that the Blazers have had two 100-yard rushers in the same game. UAB has started the 2006 season with a 2-0 record in Conference USA play for only the second time since the Blazers became a C-USA football member in 1999. The only other year that UAB was 2-0 in C-USA play was in 2004 when the Blazers began the campaign at 3-0 in league play. UAB went on to finish 5-3 in C-USA games and earn a berth in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl that season.
DILLARD KEEPS ROLLING: Jarett Dillard has jumped out of the gate looking to build upon his C-USA All Freshman team effort in 2005. He caught six passes for 61 yards and a touchdown at Tulane. His 44 catches on the season are the most by an Owl since Eric Henley caught 48 in 1990. He has caught at least two passes in all 17 games of his college career and has caught TD passes in the last eight games. The scoring streak matches DeSean Jackson of California for the longest current streak in the nation for receivers and is tied for the second longest active scoring streak in the NCAA, trailing Garrett Wolfe of Northern Illinois who has scored in 11 straight. Dillard has 13 TD catches in 17 career games, and he needs just one more scoring grab to match College Hall of Famers Froggy Williams and Buddy Dial for 4th on the Owl career list...Dillard established career-highs as he totaled 11 catches, 171 receiving yards and three touchdowns...against Army. Dillard's three TDs tied the school record, last matched in 1976. His 171 yards receiving were the third-highest total in school history while his 11 catches matched the second-highest total in school history. He is the first Owl to record 11 catches in a game since Eric Henley caught 11 for 115 yards and two scores in a 38- 17 loss vs. Arkansas on 11/4/89. The last Owl to grab 11 passes in a win was RB James Sykes, who had 11 for 136 yards in a 41-34 win over SMU on 11/6/76. It was his third career 100-yard receiving effort of the year (second in a row). The last Owl to have as many as three 100-yard receiving days in a season was David Houser, who put together a streak of straight 100-yard games in 1976. Henley had four (but none consecutive) in 1989. Dillard leads C-USA and is sixth in the nation with 7.33 catches per game. He also leads the conference with his eight TD catches and is second with in yards per game (95.3) and scoring (8 points per game).

SACK ATTACK: Rice is second in the conference with 17 sacks in the first six games, five better than they amassed in all of 2005. They have dropped opposing quarterbacks for 130 yards in losses, compared with just 61 yards lost in 2005. Courtney Gordon leads the team and is tied for second in the conference with four sacks, having racked up that total by sacking the quarterback in each of the last four games. He now has 10 career sacks and needs three to tie Tim Fitzpatrick for fith on the Owls career list. Gordon is tied with Brian Raines for the team lead with seven tackles for loss (tied for third in C-USA). He has chalked up all seven stops for losses in the last five games.
NEXT UP: The Owls head back on the road next week to meet UCF in Orlando, then after a week off, they stay on the road with games at Tulsa and UTEP before returning home to host East Carolina and SMU to close out the 2006 regular season.
